The inception of Réseau santé albertain dates back to 2004 and was made possible thanks to funding support from Health Canada. We are one of 16 networks across Canada working together as members of Société Santé en français to develop French-language health services. With respect to governance, our organization has adopted the WHO model entitled Towards Unity for Health. Our Board of Directors has broad representation from five key sectors: community, health care professionals, educational/academic institutions, health care providers and government.
In 2005, we conducted an extensive health needs assessment study of Alberta’s French-speaking population. This led to the publication of a landmark report the following year entitled French-Language Primary Health Care in Alberta: Everyone’s Business. Our report makes three major recommendations:
- To invest greater efforts in health promotion
- To improve access to health care for common illnesses
- To improve access to primary health care on an ongoing basis.
These recommendations have provided us with a strategic framework which has since guided all of our efforts and actions in advocating improved access to French-language health services across the province.
